Methodology and data policy for the local church directory

Methodology & data policy

What this directory is for, how listings are built, and how we handle the information churches share with us.

Last updated Aug 24, 2026

This directory exists to help people find a church that fits — not to tell them which one is best. Everything below explains how we build listings, what we collect, and how we handle it.

01

Purpose of this resource

Choosing a church can be a slow, word-of-mouth process, especially for people new to an area or new to church altogether. This directory brings together the practical, comparable details — service times, worship style, ministries, beliefs and practices — in one place, so someone can narrow the field before ever walking through a door.

It is a reference tool, not a recommendation engine. We don't decide which church is "right." We try to make it easier for you to decide that for yourself.

02

Scope: which congregations we list

This directory covers congregations within the historic, creedal Christian tradition — broadly, churches that affirm the Nicene understanding of the Trinity and the deity of Christ, spanning Catholic, Orthodox, and the wide range of Protestant and non-denominational churches. Our comparison fields (denomination, sacraments, worship style, beliefs and practice) are built around that shared frame, which is what lets listings be described consistently and compared side by side.

Groups not currently listed

Two groups with a significant presence in Colorado — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) and Jehovah's Witnesses — are not included. Both have a documented history of distinguishing themselves from, and in some respects explicitly rejecting identification with, mainstream/historic Christianity: each rejects the Nicene Trinity in favor of a distinct doctrine of God, and each holds additional authoritative texts or teaching authority alongside or in place of the Bible as understood by mainstream Christian churches. Given that history, their theology doesn't map cleanly onto the comparison fields this directory uses for Christian congregations, so we've kept them out of scope rather than force a fit.

This is a scope decision, not a theological judgment on our part — we're not asserting a position on the legitimacy of either group's faith. If our scope changes, this section will be updated to reflect that (see the note at the end of this page).

03

Our neutrality commitment

We take no institutional position on denomination, theology, or worship style. This directory does not rank, score, or rate churches against one another, and it does not label any tradition as more correct or more legitimate than another.

What this means in practice

Every descriptive field — including belief and practice questions — uses neutral, parallel language. A church that holds a traditional view on a topic and a church that holds a progressive one are described with the same tone, the same amount of space, and the same visual weight. Filters let you narrow by what matters to you; they are not a scoreboard.

Listing inclusion is not an endorsement of a church's teaching, and exclusion or an "unspecified" field is not a judgment either — it usually just means a church chose not to answer that question.

04

How listings are built

Every profile starts with information the church itself provides through our submission form. We don't infer a church's beliefs or practices from outside sources, sermons, or secondhand accounts, and we don't write descriptive copy on a church's behalf.

  1. Self-reported submission. A representative of the church (pastor, staff, or authorized volunteer) fills out the profile using defined answer choices where possible, so listings stay consistent and comparable.
  2. Light review. Before a listing goes live, we check it for completeness and confirm it was submitted by someone authorized to speak for the church — we do not fact-check theological claims or edit a church's own description of itself.
  3. Publication. The listing appears in the directory using exactly the categories and language the church selected.

If a church prefers not to answer a given question, they can mark it "prefer not to specify," and it will show as unspecified rather than being guessed at or left blank in a way that implies an answer.

05

What we collect

The submission form is organized into a few groups of fields:

CategoryExamples
BasicsName, address, denomination, website, contact info
Service infoService days and times, length, languages, streaming
Worship styleTraditional, contemporary, blended, or liturgical; music; sermon style
CongregationApproximate size, general age mix
MinistriesKids, youth, small groups, outreach, and similar programs
Practical detailsParking, accessibility, childcare, fellowship time
Beliefs and practiceSee below

We also collect the submitter's name, role, and email, which we use only to confirm details and reach the church if something needs clarifying. This contact information is never published on the directory.

06

Beliefs and sensitive fields

A small set of questions covers areas where churches genuinely differ and where that difference often matters to someone choosing a congregation — things like leadership roles, baptism practice, communion, and stance on marriage. We treat these carefully:

  • Every question offers a defined, neutral set of answers, plus "prefer not to specify" as a standing option.
  • We never compute a compatibility score or aggregate ranking from these answers. Filtering only shows or hides listings — it doesn't rate them.
  • We display each church's own selected answer, not our characterization of their theology.
  • A church can update or withdraw any belief answer at any time by contacting us (see below).

07

Accuracy and corrections

Listings can go out of date — service times shift, ministries change. We rely on churches to let us know when something needs updating, and we periodically reach out to listed churches to confirm their information is still current.

If you're a visitor and notice something that looks outdated or incorrect, you're welcome to flag it; we'll follow up with the church directly rather than editing a listing ourselves based on a third-party report.

08

Privacy for people browsing the directory

You don't need to create an account or provide any personal information to search, filter, or compare churches on this site.

  • We don't sell or share browsing activity with churches, advertisers, or other third parties.
  • Any basic usage analytics we collect (like which pages are visited) are used only in aggregate, to understand whether the directory is useful, not to track individuals.
  • If we ever add optional features that require an account (like saving favorites), we'll update this page before doing so.

09

Data retention and removal

We keep a church's submitted profile live for as long as the church wants to be listed. A church can request at any time that we:

  • Update any field in their listing
  • Change or withdraw any belief/practice answer
  • Remove their listing from the directory entirely

Submitter contact information (name, role, email) is retained only for as long as needed to administer the listing, and is deleted upon request or when a listing is removed.
